The Derbyshire Wye Fly Fishing Experience is just that, working in conjunction with friend, colleague and angling guru Philip White APGAI, we break the course into three phases. The first phase is actually in the classroom discussing, and tying the flies needed for phases two and three. Phase two is conducted on the Monsal beat above Bakewell, fishing for the unique Wild River Rainbow, along with Wild Brownies, all casts are with one fly only, these fish are no’ push overs’, but with local expert advice and help at hand there is every chance of success.
Our latest excursion on Sunday May 16th, although very challenging through a persistant cold down stream wind, our anglers had an extremely successful day’s excursion. Every angler caught a prime example of both Wild Rainbow as well as Brown Trout, and the average for the day was five fish a piece.
Phase three stretches the anglers water craft and casting techniques to the full, as they attempt to fool the resident Wild Brown & Rainbow Trout and Grayling to come to the fly, on this water the angler is restricted to ‘Dry’ fly only. I would not advise novice fly tiers or novice anglers to take on this three phase challenge, rewarding as it is, I would respectfully suggest joining us on the Welsh Dee excursions first, the Trout and Grayling Days, and perhaps the very popular three day residential package of the Winter Grayling School.
Phase Three arrived on Sunday 27th June, arguably the hottest day of the year so far, after a 10.00am Breakfast we went off to our base camp for the Day, positioned ideally on the Haddon Estate Water, Phil and I took the party along some of the various beat's likely holding areas, discussing tactics and casts, Phil, suggested that to get in touch with any fish this day would be a great achivement, once again our party exceeded expectations, all anglers had fish, in deed three of the six had the honorary 'McNab', bestowed upon them, for catching the three available game species in the one day off the river, the species were namely the Wild River Rainbow Trout - Wild Brown Trout - and The Lady of the Stream, The Grayling, having experienced a full day's fishing we put up rods at 10.15pm, just in time to see a most beautiful Barn Owl seaching for its supper across the unspoilt fields and trees surrounding this pristine fishery.
