Gordon James. 1914-2002.
My father introduced me to fishing in general at the age of eight, we would travel to Greymist at Woolston in Warrington as well as the local canals course fishing. However by the age of 10 I had discovered football, which dictated my recreational time for many years with fishing taking a bit of a back seat.
I finally gave up playing football, and coaching football in my late 40’s, and immediately re-prioritized fishing. Having renovated my Grandfather’s old cane rod, a rod my Father had also fished with, gave me inspiration to fire up the passion for angling again, to a point where it took over every spare moment of my life and then some.
However the twist was the lure of the Fly Rod and Fly Fishing, and Course Fishing to a lesser degree, my early fixes were gained learning the craft of casting by attending as many Game Shows and Casting Exhibitions as I could, at most of these were my earliest inspirations towards casting, namely Charles Jardine and Gary Coxen.
Charles Jardine has always had time to encourage me with my fishing and coaching, however the individual who took the time and energy to guide and mentor me to the high standards I set myself, namely Gwilym Hughes. To Gwilym I owe everything in terms of my professionalism and skills, if ever you are fortunate to be around Gwilym in a fishing environment you will understand he is one of the true ‘Greats’ of our sport.
